Peppermint Essential Oil: A Refreshing Remedy for Headaches and Respiratory Issues

Peppermint essential oil is one of the most versatile and widely used oils in Aromatherapy. The menthol in it provides a cooling sensation which helps soothe tension and keeps you calm and relaxed.

Peppermint Oil for Headaches

The menthol present in the peppermint oil can help ease tension headaches and migraines. It helps soothe muscle contractions and stimulate blood flow in the forehead and temples, giving a relief to the headache.

How to Use Peppermint Oil for Headaches

  • Inhalation: In a diffuser, add a few drops of peppermint essential oil mixed with water or any carrier oil, and burn it in your room. Another way to inhale is to add a few drops of the oil in a steamer and inhale it through your nose or taking steam around your temple and forehead area can help you provide relief from headaches.

  • Topical Application/Massage: Dilute a few drops of peppermint essential oil with almond oil or coconut oil. Apply the mixture to your temples, forehead, and back of the neck and massage gently for a few minutes. This helps reduce headaches and provides calmness and relief from the pain.

Peppermint Oil for Respiratory Congestion

This oil has antiviral, antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties which helps combat respiratory infections and reduce inflammations in the respiratory tract. It is a natural decongestant that can help clear sinuses and chest. Just like how we apply Vicks VapoRub when we have a cold, this oil does exactly the same but in a more holistic way.

How to Use Peppermint Oil for Respiratory Issues

  • Steam Inhalation: Add a few drops of the oil in a bowl full of hot water or a vapouriser or a steamer. Cover your head with a towel and inhale steam through your nose for about 10 minutes. This will help clear the nasal passage and relieve breathing.

  • Topical Application: Mix 2-3 drops of peppermint oil with a carrier oil and massage gently on your chest and throat. This will help open the airways and make breathing easier.

  • Diffusion: You may use peppermint oil in a diffuser to spread the aroma in the room. This will help purify the air and provide ease while breathing.

Tips While Using Peppermint Oil

Always dilute the oil with a carrier oil while applying topically and mix with water while inhaling or using in a diffuser.

This oil generally suits everyone however it is recommended to take a patch test before using it directly. In case you may experience any distress refrain from using the oil.

This oil can cause a burning sensation if it encounters your eyes. In case you feel the oil has gotten into your eyes, immediately wash your eyes with cold water and refrain from using the oil for a few hours.

Pregnant women and children should avoid using the oil. It may cause respiratory distress for children under the age of six.

Always remember using peppermint oil is not a substitute for any medication. It is only a complementary treatment along with regular medication.
