We all love playing Holi. It absolutely brings out the child in you. While it is a festival celebrated with great fun, it may cause damage to your skin and hair. From staying too long in the sun to over scrubbing your skin to get the colours off can cause a great deal of damage.
Holi was traditionally played with natural colours made from flowers and herbs. But today, Holi is played with chemically dyed colours. One way to protect your skin is to use home-made colours with natural flowers and vegetables. Below are a few ways to keep your skin protected from the harshness of Holi colours.
-
Sunscreen: Apply sunscreen with a high SPF on your face and neck to protect your skin from sun damage. If you are in the sun for more than 3 hours, remember to re-apply.
-
Oiling: Apply Almond Oil on your body, lips, and face. This will protect them from dryness and will help in getting the Holi colours off easily.
-
Nail Protection: Apply a coat of transparent nail polish or petroleum jelly or Blossom Kochhar Aroma Magic Cold Cream to avoid nails from getting affected by harsh colours.
-
Hydration: Since you are going to be in the sun for a long time, it is important to keep hydrating. This will help the skin from drying out and reduce any damage.
-
Clothes: It is safe to wear natural cotton or breathable clothes while playing Holi as they do not cause any rash when in contact with colour and water. Synthetic fabrics such as polyester, rayon, etc. may cause rashes on your skin. Remember to wear full sleeves kurta or T-shirt and full-length jeans or joggers to reduce direct contact of skin from harsh colours.
-
Sunglasses: Preferably wear a pair of sunglasses while playing Holi. This will not only save your eyes from any harsh colours but also protect you from the sun.
-
Scrub: Use a homemade scrub to get rid of Holi colours and any dead skin. Mix 2 tablespoons of masoor daal and 1 tablespoon of flour in rose water with a pinch of turmeric powder. Keep it on your skin for 10 minutes and gently scrub it off. Rinse with water to take out the rest of the paste.
- Holi Colours: It is safe to play Holi with natural colours or flowers. You can make some hues at your home with ingredients that are available in the kitchen. In a bowl, take 1 tablespoon of turmeric powder and 1 teaspoon of cornflour. Mix it with water and form a paste. Lay this mixture in a flat tray with a cling wrap or butter paper on the base and let it dry. Once the paste is dry, grind it into fine powder to form the bright yellow Holi colour.
Now play a safe skin-friendly Holi with your loved ones!
